Public Transportation in Barcelona

Mastering Barcelona’s public transportation system is essential for seamlessly navigating this city. Learn how to make the most of it with the guide we’ve prepared for you.

Barcelona's Public Transportation: A Comprehensive Guide

Understanding how public transportation in Barcelona operates is crucial for getting around the city with ease. Discover how to use public transportation in Barcelona.

Urban Bus

Barcelona’s mobility encompasses a total of 150 urban bus lines belonging to 9 different concessionaires. Of these, 133 lines operate during the day, while 17 are nighttime services (Nitbus). To explore available routes and learn how to use them to reach your destination, visit the official TMB bus website.

Metro

Barcelona’s transportation includes 11 metro lines, 8 of which are managed by the City Council (TMB) and 3 by the autonomous community (FGC). Similar to buses, the metro offers good accessibility and operates night services.

Tram

Trams play a significant role in Barcelona’s public transportation. The city has 6 “modern” tram lines (TRAM) connecting the capital with neighboring municipalities like Badalona or L’Hospitalet. There’s also a historic tram (Tramvia Blau) that’s currently inactive.

Train

One of the great advantages of public transportation in Barcelona is the number of train stations spread throughout the city. Including commuter and regional trains, there are 18 different railway lines that pass through the city. Schedules and the best routes to reach your destination can be found on the Rodalies website.

Funicular and cable car

Barcelona has three funiculars: Montjuic, Tibidabo, and Vallvidrera. Additionally, for a scenic aerial view, don’t miss the cable car ride to Montjuic.

Biking

For a healthy and eco-friendly mode of transport, try Barcelona’s public bicycle service. Available to residents over 16 years old, it’s easily managed through a smartphone app.

Taxis

Barcelona’s public transportation is complemented by a vast fleet of taxis, boasting the highest ratio per capita in Spain. Companies like Uber and Cabify also offer their services.

Barcelona's Transport Card: Everything You Need to Know

Unlike other cities, Barcelona does not offer a single transport card. In reality, the Catalan capital provides several options designed to meet the specific needs of each traveler. Discover the cost of public transportation in Barcelona.

These transport tickets are nominative and valid for a single zone. Here are the approved fares for 2024:

  • Single ticket for metro and bus (€2.55): valid for a single journey.
  • T-casual (€12.15): includes 11 trips, with a free transfer if made within 75 minutes. Does not cover trips to airport metro stations.
  • T-usual (€21.35): unlimited travel over a period of 30 consecutive days.
  • Hola BCN! (€15.75 – €36.72): subscription designed for tourists, available in four versions, valid for 48 to 120 hours. Allows unlimited access to all public transport in Barcelona for a fixed price.
  • T-dia (€11.20): round trip to the airport by metro plus unlimited travel for 24 hours.

For those in need of a public transport card in Barcelona for multiple people, there are two subscriptions valid for 30 days without airport service: T-grup (€79.45 / 70 trips) and T-familiar (€10.70 / 8 trips).

Ultimately, what makes a stay enjoyable in a city is accommodation and urban mobility options. Imagine how pleasant your stay can be by combining Barcelona’s excellent public transport network with the accommodations we sell and rent at Loca Barcelona?
