Discover the history and architecture of Ciutat Vella

Ciutat Vella, or Old City in French, is one of the ten administrative districts of Barcelona. It is the city’s first district, encompassing its entire historic center, hence its name “Vella” (Old). Additionally, it is the third most densely populated area. Understanding Barcelona’s origin and evolution is incomplete without a deep knowledge of this district, which is why we want to tell you more about the history of Ciutat Vella and its connection to art, especially modernist architecture.

The history of the Ciutat Vella district

The origin of Ciutat Vella is actually the origin of Barcelona itself. The County City was originally composed solely of this district and the Eixample. In fact, Ciutat Vella is perfectly delimited by the walls that once protected Barcelona. The first wall was of Roman origin and the last one erected dates from the 15th century. Eventually, after the demolition of all these structures in 1854, the city’s growth began with the Eixample.

The history of Barcelona’s oldest district dates back to the Roman Empire, on Mont Taber. The Romans chose a small hill between two streams, which are today La Rambla and Via Layetana, and founded Barcino there. Until the 12th century, Barcelona remained enclosed within the Roman walls. Later, it began to expand around the suburbs that extended outside.

Felipe V had this large military citadel built to control the city in 1715. Today, it’s a park that houses some of the best architectural works of Ciutat Vella. As you walk through Parc de la Ciutadella, you can admire true marvels like the monumental waterfall designed by Josep Fontserè in 1875 with the help of a young Antoni Gaudí. Palau Güell was one of the first major commissions received by the great architect Antoni Gaudí. Eusebi Güell (an industrialist, politician, and renowned patron) wanted the young Gaudí to design this particular urban palace as an extension of the family home he had on Barcelona’s famous Rambla.

The building is made of Garraf limestone, where Güell actually had a property. It has a modernist style, and Gaudí’s imprint is visible in every part of the palace. If you want to enjoy the history and architecture of Ciutat Vella, don’t miss Palau Güell.

The Liceu is one of the most historic buildings in Ciutat Vella. This theater was inaugurated in 1847, but it lasted only 14 years, as a fire destroyed it in 1861. In 1862, the Liceu was reopened, but unfortunately, in 1994, it was again victim to another fire that closed it for some time. During this last fire, the entire population collaborated to rebuild it. As you can see, this theater is steeped in history.

As you can see, this neighborhood is full of corners to discover. The history and architecture of Ciutat Vella are unique to Barcelona and show us what life was like in the early days of this city.
