Public transportation in Eixample

Understanding how public transportation works in Eixample is essential for navigating this city like a pro. Learn how to make the most of it with the guide we’ve prepared for you.

Eixample’s public transportation : A comprehensive guide

The district of Eixample in Barcelona is one of the best-connected areas in the entire city. It’s no wonder, as this part of the city encompasses six neighborhoods: Dreta de l’Eixample, Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample, Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample, Fort Pienc, Sagrada Familia, and Sant Antoni. Eixample is the most densely populated area in the city, largely due to its strong infrastructure and transportation system. While Barcelona’s public transport network is well-developed, our aim is to streamline your understanding by focusing specifically on transportation within Eixample. This will help you navigate the district’s array of transportation options with ease, ensuring you don’t get lost among the variety of choices available.

Urban Bus

Another method of transportation in Eixample is the bus. The City of Barcelona has 28 high-performance express lines, in addition to conventional lines, neighborhood bus lines, and night lines that operate between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

In the specific case of Eixample, some of the most important lines include H8, V11, 19, 20, 43, and 44. Of the night routes, which in total comprise nine routes in the city, at least five pass through the district or very close areas.

Metro

The Barcelona Metro has extensive coverage that spans the entire city. In total, there are eleven lines plus the funicular to Montjuic, and of these, five pass through the most densely populated district. Mobility in Eixample, therefore, is well-covered thanks to the subway.

Specifically, the lines that stop in this area of the city are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. In turn, the Montjuic funicular also has a station at the southern end of Eixample. However, this mode of transportation is not intended to facilitate transit between different points in Barcelona, but only to quickly reach the top of Magic Mountain.

Tram

A third alternative for getting around Eixample is the tram. TRAM consists of two networks that cover much of the city, with six lines, an extension of 29.2 kilometers, and multiple stops.

This method of transportation not only includes Barcelona but also nearby municipalities such as L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, and Badalona. Specifically, two of these lines move through Eixample, T1 travels through the neighborhood from north to south, and T2 from east to west.

Train

In the Eixample of Barcelona, trains are an integral part of the public transportation system, connecting different areas of the city and its surroundings. Available train lines include the Renfe commuter service, which provides fast and efficient connections between Barcelona and its surroundings, as well as the metro service, which offers an extensive network covering the entire city, including Eixample.

In particular, metro lines like L2 (purple line) and L5 (blue line) are essential for transportation within Eixample, as they traverse the district and connect key points such as Sagrada Familia, Sants station, and Passeig de Gràcia station, among others. These train lines provide a quick and convenient option for getting around the city, facilitating access to tourist attractions, residential areas, and shopping centers in Eixample and beyond.

Bicing

Another option for getting around this district is through the bike lane in Eixample. Barcelona has a bike-friendly network with nearly 1,150 kilometers of varied routes. This extensive network consists of bike lanes, roads, and areas specially designated for cycling.

Eixample has more than twenty routes that cross the district from the interior to the coast and from south to north of the city and vice versa. In addition, there are dozens of stations for using urban bicycles and numerous repair points on the different streets of the neighborhood.

Taxis

We set aside collective means of transportation in Eixample to move on to taxis. This district has more than 30 stops distributed in its various neighborhoods. These points are located mainly on the main streets and avenues such as Gran Vía, Diagonal, Rambla de Catalunya, Avenida de Roma, Passeig de Gràcia, Parque Güell, and Museo Picasso.

The appeal of public transportation in Eixample

Considering living in the Eixample district? You can rest assured that getting around won’t be a concern, thanks to its excellent transportation network. The public transport system in Eixample adds yet another layer of appeal to this district, making it one of the most desirable areas in all of Barcelona. The convenience of exploring the city and its neighborhoods without relying on a private vehicle serves as an added incentive to choose this urban space as your home.
