Everything you need to know before visiting Barcelona Cathedral

Barcelona Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the city’s most iconic monuments. Its historical background and the great architectural design that characterises it have made it one of the main tourist attractions in Ciutat Vella – it’s easy to see why. So, we want to share with you this small guide with everything you need to know for your visit to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Santa Eulalia.

History of Barcelona Cathedral

Catedral de Barcelona

Though the current cathedral was built during the 13th and 15th centuries, its origins date back to the 4th century. At first, it was an early Christian temple dedicated to the Holy Cross. Later in the year 877, it was also dedicated to Santa Eulalia.

Over time, it became a Romanesque-style cathedral and it was not until 1 May 1298 that construction began on what we know today as Barcelona Cathedral. The remains of the old early Christian basilica are still visible in the basement of the City History Museum.

The last construction work on the Cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia was carried out in the 19th century when a new neo-Gothic façade was erected. A short century later it became a Heritage Asset in 1929.

What is Barcelona Cathedral like inside

The interior of Barcelona Cathedral hides an endless number of rooms in which its Gothic style can be appreciated to perfection. However, its architectural design is not the only thing that stands out, as each room has a unique history that makes it special. The temple can be divided into the following areas:

Main Altar

The Main Altar is made of white marble and measures approximately 3 metres in length. It was consecrated by Bishop Ferrer Abella in 1337 and now stands on two 6th-century capitals that originally belonged to the old early Christian Cathedral.

In the middle of the central columns behind the main altar lies one of the works of sculptor Frederic Maré. The image depicts the Exaltation of the Holy Cross surrounded by six angels.
In addition, one can find a mid-14th century seat carved in alabaster at its base.

The Crypt of Santa Eulalia

Below the Main Altar lies the Crypt of Santa Eulalia, one of the most illuminated spaces inside Barcelona Cathedral. It still preserves the ancient 4th-century tomb of the virgin martyr Saint Eulalia. Inside the crypt is a Gothic sarcophagus of polychrome alabaster containing the saint’s remains.

The tomb of Saint Raymond of Peñafort

The tomb of San Raimundo de Peñafort is nestled under the altar of his chapel, featuring the figure of the saint. There is also the sepulchre of the Convent of Santa Catalina, which dates from the 14th century. When you visit, pay special attention to the upper part of the altar, as you will see the Gothic tomb of San Raimundo de Peñafort with scenes from his life.

The Cloister

This area is located next to Barcelona Cathedral and is easily accessible through the floor of the Cathedral. The cloister is highly appreciated by visitors for its courtyard lined with palm trees and the unusual presence of 13 geese. The birds live in the temple and represent the age of Saint Eulalia when she was martyred. It is also one of Barcelona’s most iconic spots, renowned for the unique local tradition known as the “Dancing Egg” or ‘Ou com Balla’.

The Choir

One of the greatest sculptural works inside Barcelona Cathedral is the choir, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Perhaps its most striking feature are the canopies and pinnacles built in the Catalan Gothic style by sculptor Michael Lochner. The choir hides details in every corner. If you look closely at the backs of the seats, you will discover paintings of the coats of arms of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Chapel of Santa Lucia

The chapel of Santa Lucia was built between 1257 and 1268 in the late Romanesque style. Originally, it was dedicated to the Holy Virgins, but since 1296 it has been dedicated solely to Saint Lucy, the protector of sight. The building is rectangular in shape and has two entrance doors, both of which lead to the cloister and the outside. Similarly, this room is full of intricate details such as columns carved with geometric and animal figures. However, the most interesting features are undoubtedly the two tombs containing the remains of Bishop Arnau de Gurb and Canon Francesc de Santa Coloma.

Chapter House

Right next to the Chapel of Santa Lucia is the Chapter House. The interior is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and is decorated with paintings depicting the Glorification of Saint Eulalia and Saint Olegarius. Access to this room and marvellous 18th-century paintings can be gained through the cloister.

Chapel of Lepanto

Finally, inside Barcelona Cathedral is the Chapel of Lepanto. It is a small chapterhouse for holding meetings and is considered special due to the unusual crucifix. The crucifix of the Holy Christ of Lepanto is famous for its tilted shape. As legend has it, the crucifix tilted on its own accord when the ship carrying it came under attack. This cross, along with the geese and the dancing egg, are the greatest curiosities of Barcelona Cathedral, and key reasons for its fame.

What other activities can you do there

Most people think only the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Santa Eulalia are on offer. As well as offering other experiences around the temple and its historical period, you can also take other types of tours, which will enhance your visit by far.

Without a doubt, one of the top things to do in the Gothic Quarter is to visit the Cathedral in the evening. Here, you can explore the church after it has closed and head up to the terrace for some of the best views in Barcelona. It’s a unique experience that few people know about, and we highly recommend it.

Where to buy tickets for the cathedral?

Although tickets for the Cathedral are available on various websites or at the temple’s physical ticket office, we recommend purchasing them through the official website. This way, you’ll get the best price and avoid the daily lines that form when visiting this monument.

Where to eat near Barcelona Cathedral?

Ciutat Vella has plenty of restaurants to choose from after your visit to the monument, but if you’re looking for something near the Cathedral with a touch of history, Can Culleretes is the place to go. Open since 1786, it still serves the same traditional dishes as it did in its early days.
