Discover the local gastronomy at the Boquería Market

Spanish gastronomy is a global benchmark. Spanish gastronomy has become a reference for foodies worldwide and Catalan gastronomy has some of the most popular dishes and ingredients globally.

La Boquería Market is an obligatory stop when you visit Barcelona. It is the city’s main market and one of the best places to sample the local gastronomy. Today we’re going to share a little guide full of tips and everything you need to know to enjoy this great gastronomic market to the fullest. If you’ve read our guide on top things to do in Ciutat Vella, you’ll know how seriously we take this. Let’s dig in!

Origin of the Boqueria market

El Mercado de la Boquería

The Boqueria Market was unveiled in 1840, but its origins date back to the year 1200. It then operated outdoors just outside the gates of the old city. In the past, the terrace of Ll Llano de la Boqueria (hence its name) was the site of street vendors and farmers from the villages, who would set up shop there in order to sell their produce.

In more recent history, the Boquería Market became Barcelona’s main market from the 19th century onwards. Since then it has been the main focus of gastronomy and today has become a major tourist attraction where visitors can sample the very best of local cuisine.

What's in the Boquería Market?

The Boquería Market is made up of more than 300 stalls including restaurants and food shops. This market is characterised by its stalls specialising in different types of food and by their outstanding quality. Many of the best restaurants in Ciutat Vella buy their products at the Boqueria, as they have great local produce.

In addition to its great gastronomic appeal, the Boqueria Market is widely known for its structure, which was built between 1836 and 1840. During your visit, we recommend taking some time to marvel at the metal structures and the classic windows that make it up.

Where to eat in the Boqueria Market?

As we’ve mentioned, the Boqueria is full of food stalls and restaurants where you can eat the produce you see. Although in recent years there have been a number of food stalls offering international fast food, there are still stalls with wholly local food. Here are the must-visit bars and restaurants in the Boqueria:

El Quim de la Boqueria

It’s no wonder why this is one of the busiest restaurants in the Boquería Market.
Offering a great selection and more than 30 years of experience, eating at this restaurant is a safe bet.

Its menu features typical local dishes and all kinds of tapas at a great price. They also have a wide variety of grilled dishes such as cuttlefish or Galician octopus leg. What a treat!

Bar Boqueria

In our opinion, Bar Boqueria has to be the best place to eat in the Boqueria Market. Don’t let the name fool you – it has nothing to do with the classic Spanish bar. This place is characterised by its selection of traditional local tapas, presented in a way never seen before and with spectacular flavours.

It’s impossible to choose just two dishes from their extensive menu. But, you definitely can’t leave without trying their mille-feuille twist on patatas bravas and the octopus meatballs with pistachios.

Clemen’s Bar

At this point, it should be clear just how delicious the dishes are in the Boqueria. If you’re not convinced, our final recommendation should do the trick. Bar Clemen’s is the ideal option for those looking for the best quality seafood. This place specialises in seafood and fish, so if you’re a seafood lover, this is the place for you.
