Guide: visiting CosmoCaixa Museum

CosmoCaixa museum stands out as one of the best museums in Barcelona, dedicated to making science and technology accessible to people of all ages. In this article, we will explore its origins and everything this museum has to offer.

History of the CosmoCaixa Museum

Museo Cosmocaixa Barcelona

In 1909, architect Josep Doménech Estapà designed a modernist-style asylum for the blind. Seventy years later, the asylum closed to make way for the science museum of the “La Caixa” Foundation. This version of the museum was open until the early 2000s, when it was renovated and reopened in 2004 as CosmoCaixa. Although the space has been expanded to accommodate new exhibits, the building still retains its original modernist style. Today, it is one of the most important museums in Barcelona and a leading centre for science communication across Europe.

Exhibitions on the CosmoCaixa Museum

The museum boasts many permanent exhibits covering various aspects of the world of science.
These exhibitions are housed in the “Sala Universo,” which is divided into three main areas: El Kósmos, located next to the geological wall, focuses on the origin of the universe through the laws of physics, explaining the formation of the Earth and life on our planet. Evolution, in front of the famous flooded forest that recreates the Amazon rainforest, centres on the birth of biodiversity on Earth through animals, fossils, and digital reproductions. Finally, Boundaries explores the limits of human knowledge and the scientific challenges of the 21st century.

Activities on the CosmoCaixa

CosmoCaixa’s main goal is to spark interest in science, offering a wide range of activities and temporary exhibitions for everyone:

  • Clik and Creactivity are dedicated spaces for young children, where they can explore science and creativity through free play and discovery.
  • The museum has two different planetariums. The Bubble Planetarium is designed for children aged 5 to 8, giving them the chance to learn about planets and constellations. On the other hand, the Digital Planetarium allows visitors to enjoy a dome that offers an immersive experience of the cosmos.
  • Additionally, the centre has several rooms available for events, workshops, and classes, such as the auditorium and the agora.

Things to do around CosmoCaixa

CosmoCaixa is located in a peaceful area of Barcelona, close to several key tourist attractions. In under 20 minutes by car, you can reach Tibidabo, Parc Güell, or the Collserola mountain range.
The Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district is one of Barcelona’s most exclusive areas. In addition to offering many green spaces away from the city hustle and bustle, you’ll find a variety of luxury accommodations.
