Guide: visit the Palau de la Música Catalana

The Palau de la Música Catalana is not just a concert hall, but also a historic monument. Its cultural significance and architectural design led to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. In this guide, we’ll explore its history, architecture, and the events that have made the Palau de la Música an essential destination for anyone visiting the city.

History

Interior Palau de la Música Barcelona

In 1891, the Orfeó Català, a prominent choral society in Catalonia, was founded in Barcelona. With the growth of the group came the need for a dedicated venue to meet, rehearse, and perform. Thus, the Palau de la Música Catalana was born.

To build the Palau, they chose the site of an old cloister from the Church of San Francisco de Paula, which had been damaged by fire in 1854. The modernist architect Domènech i Montaner drew inspiration from nature and used materials like iron and glass to create an innovative and unique structure for its time.

The Palau de la Música opened its doors in 1908, showcasing a masterpiece of modernism. In 1971, it was declared a National Monument, and in 1992, alongside the Sant Pau modernist complex, UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site.

Architecture

Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the most renowned modernist architects in history, the building is characterized by its vibrant use of stained glass and mosaics, making it one of Barcelona’s most visited modernist landmarks.

The building has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years. Today, the main concert hall is located on the first floor, while the ground floor is home to the offices of the Orfeó Català.

The Façade

The Palau’s original façade, located on Carrer de Sant Pere Més Alt, was the only entrance until 1989. This façade blends modernist and baroque elements, featuring Miquel Blay’s sculpture “La cançó popular catalana” (“The Catalan Popular Song”), which represents the people to whom traditional Catalan music is dedicated.

The current main entrance is in the square created after the demolition of the Church of San Francisco de Paula in 2002. From the square, you can admire the stained glass window that was previously hidden by the church. In the 1980s, a service building was added to the left side, featuring a sculpture dedicated to one of the choir’s founders and the entrance to the Palau’s restaurant, El Mirador del Palau, where you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine.

The Interior

The interior of the Palau is filled with trencadís, the broken-tile mosaic technique that is a hallmark of Catalan modernism. From the main entrance, you can access the foyer, an open space for public use, often serving as a resting area during concert intermissions or a place to enjoy a coffee. The lobby also features a grand staircase adorned with glass balustrades.

The concert hall seats 2,049 people and is bathed in color and light thanks to the stained glass windows, mosaic-covered columns, and the iconic inverted stained glass dome in the ceiling, which casts a warm, colorful glow over the auditorium.

On stage, the grand organ draws attention with its impressive size, sitting above the mosaic of 18 modernist muses, each playing different musical instruments. Other artistic tributes to music include busts of Beethoven and Josep Anselm Clavé, and sculptures depicting Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.”

In front of the concert hall, you’ll find the Lluís Millet Hall, a spacious lounge dedicated to the composer, featuring beautiful glass doors that lead to a terrace adorned with trencadís-covered columns.

Between 1982 and 1989, a new six-story building was added, containing dressing rooms, an archive, a library, meeting rooms, and the Petit Palau, a smaller auditorium with 538 seats, built on the site of the old Church of San Francisco de Paula.
