Everything you need to know for your visit to Park Güell

Park Guell is one of the most symbolic and stunning sites in the Catalan capital. For many, it is at the top of their things to do in Barcelona. Like all of Antoni Gaudí’s works, this park holds great charm and displays the geometric decorations that define the architect’s style. At Loca Barcelona, we’ve created a guide filled with its history, tips and useful information for your visit to the park. Read on to discover all that our guide to visiting Park Güell has to offer. Let’s get started!

History of Park Güell

El park Güell en Barcelona

Before being a public park with gardens, Park Güell was a project for the private enjoyment of a housing estate for wealthy families on Montaña Pelada. The development included some 60 triangular-shaped plots with a complex network of paths, viaducts and stairways that crossed the topography of the land. The building conditions were very restrictive, as only one-sixth of the plot could be built on. The height and location of the houses could not obstruct the view of the sea or the sun for the neighbours.

Gaudí took inspiration from British residential parks, which is why he called it Park Güell, i.e. in English.

The young architect preserved the existing vegetation on the old estate, keeping trees like olive and carob in place. He also introduced various plants from the Mediterranean ecosystem, which were in low demand. To protect the land from erosion, Gaudí designed irrigation systems through other water collection and storage systems.

In 1900, the land was levelled and construction of Parc Güell began. The work progressed rapidly, and the project was completed in 1907, by which time various events had already taken place in the large square.

The first person to buy a plot in Park Güell was a friend of Eusebi Güell (who commissioned Gaudí to design the project). Later, Gaudí himself moved there with his father and niece.

The construction was abandoned in 1914 due to a lack of buyers. Since only two houses had been built on the site, it was converted into a large private garden. Eight years after Eusebi Güell’s passing in 1926, it finally opened its doors to the public as a municipal park. The Güell family house was also transformed into a public school.

Finally, Gaudí’s house was opened to the public as a museum in 1963. The park was later declared an artistic monument in 1969 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

What to see in Park Güell

The park spans 19 hectares, but it’s within 12 of those that you’ll find everything there is to see in Park Güell. The central point of the monumental area (an area with places of interest), boasts an impressive panorama of Barcelona, although you can also enjoy it from several different spots. In this guide, we’ll detail the most iconic points of Park Güell that you should visit.

Porter’s Lodge Pavillions

This serves as the main entrance to Parc Güell, showcasing an impressive façade that encompasses the architectural theme of the park. The stone wall is decorated with ceramic mosaics and iron gates are forged to resemble palm leaves. There are two pavilions, one of which houses the caretaker and the other the concierge’s office.

The Dragon Stairway

The Dragon Stairway is one of the most emblematic areas of Park Güell thanks to its sculpture of a dragon, which gives the staircase its name. The staircase is divided into three flights and has a fountain along the edge, with each flight showcasing a different motif.

The Hypostyle Room

At the end of the Dragon Staircase is a large space called the Hypostyle Room. The entire space is supported by 86 fluted columns. Always challenging the classical rules of composition, the outer columns tilt in an undulating fashion. Originally, this section was intended to be the marketplace of the estate.

The Greek Theatre ( or Nature Square)

Originally called the Greek Theatre, a large open-air space can be found in the centre of the monumental area of Park Güell. Now known as ‘Plaça de la Natura’ or Nature Square, is a beautiful green space lush with plants, which was previously used for large open-air shows.

The Laundry Room Portico

On the eastern side of the Greek Theatre square is an iron gate leading to the gardens of Larrad House. The path winds above the ground through a pine forest that reaches a spiral ramp, descending to the house.

Austrian Gardens

The area was converted into a municipal plant nursery when the development of the residential complex was cancelled. Austria donated a number of trees that give this area of Park Güell its distinctive appearance. This is the site of Antoni Gaudí’s house, which has now become the Gaudí House Museum.
