The origin of Ciutat Vella is actually the origin of Barcelona itself. The County City was originally composed solely of this district and the Eixample. In fact, Ciutat Vella is perfectly delimited by the walls that once protected Barcelona. The first wall was of Roman origin and the last one erected dates from the 15th century. Eventually, after the demolition of all these structures in 1854, the city’s growth began with the Eixample.<\/p>

The history of Barcelona’s oldest district dates back to the Roman Empire, on Mont Taber. The Romans chose a small hill between two streams, which are today La Rambla and Via Layetana, and founded Barcino there. Until the 12th century, Barcelona remained enclosed within the Roman walls. Palau G\u00fcell was one of the first major commissions received by the great architect Antoni Gaud\u00ed. Eusebi G\u00fcell (an industrialist, politician, and renowned patron) wanted the young Gaud\u00ed to design this particular urban palace as an extension of the family home he had on Barcelona’s famous Rambla.<\/p>

The building is made of Garraf limestone, where G\u00fcell actually had a property. It has a modernist style, and Gaud\u00ed’s imprint is visible in every part of the palace.
