History of Park G\u00fcell <\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Before being a public park with gardens, Park G\u00fcell was a project for the private enjoyment of a housing estate for wealthy families on Monta\u00f1a Pelada. The development included some 60 triangular-shaped plots with a complex network of paths, viaducts and stairways that crossed the topography of the land. The building conditions were very restrictive, as only one-sixth of the plot could be built on. The height and location of the houses could not obstruct the view of the sea or the sun for the neighbours.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Gaud\u00ed took inspiration from British residential parks, which is why he called it Park G\u00fcell, i.e. in English.<\/p>

The young architect preserved the existing vegetation on the old estate, keeping trees like olive and carob in place. He also introduced various plants from the Mediterranean ecosystem, which were in low demand. To protect the land from erosion, Gaud\u00ed designed irrigation systems through other water collection and storage systems.<\/p>

In 1900, the land was levelled and construction of Parc G\u00fcell began. The work progressed rapidly, and the project was completed in 1907, by which time various events had already taken place in the large square.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The first person to buy a plot in Park G\u00fcell was a friend of Eusebi G\u00fcell (who commissioned Gaud\u00ed to design the project). Later, Gaud\u00ed himself moved there with his father and niece.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The construction was abandoned in 1914 due to a lack of buyers. Since only two houses had been built on the site, it was converted into a large private garden. Eight years after Eusebi G\u00fcell’s passing in 1926, it finally opened its doors to the public as a municipal park. The G\u00fcell family house was also transformed into a public school.<\/p>

Finally, Gaud\u00ed’s house was opened to the public as a museum in 1963. The park was later declared an artistic monument in 1969 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

This serves as the main entrance to Parc G\u00fcell, showcasing an impressive fa\u00e7ade that encompasses the architectural theme of the park. The stone wall is decorated with ceramic mosaics and iron gates are forged to resemble palm leaves. There are two pavilions, one of which houses the caretaker and the other the concierge’s office.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Dragon Stairway is one of the most emblematic areas of Park G\u00fcell thanks to its sculpture of a dragon, which gives the staircase its name. At the end of the Dragon Staircase is a large space called the Hypostyle Room. The entire space is supported by 86 fluted columns. Always challenging the classical rules of composition, the outer columns tilt in an undulating fashion. Originally called the Greek Theatre, a large open-air space can be found in the centre of the monumental area of Park G\u00fcell. Now known as \u2018Pla\u00e7a de la Natura\u2019 or Nature Square, is a beautiful green space lush with plants, which was previously used for large open-air shows.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On the eastern side of the Greek Theatre square is an iron gate leading to the gardens of Larrad House. The path winds above the ground through a pine forest that reaches a spiral ramp, descending to the house.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The area was converted into a municipal plant nursery when the development of the residential complex was cancelled. Austria donated a number of trees that give this area of Park G\u00fcell its distinctive appearance.
