In the 10th century, a small chapel stood where the basilica is today. As Barcelona grew in population and wealth over the centuries, the residents of the area wanted a larger temple, so construction of the basilica began in 1319. It was named Santa Maria del Pi after the large pine tree that stood in the square in front of it.<\/p>

The construction took several decades, typical of that era due to the size and complexity of the project, as well as the need to gather sufficient funds. The final design included a central nave, side chapels, and a grand fa\u00e7ade featuring a large rose window.<\/p>

Over the centuries, the basilica underwent multiple renovations, mainly due to historical events that caused damage to its structure and interior. In 1714, during the War of Spanish Succession, several interior elements were destroyed, and much of the damaged areas were rebuilt in the following years.<\/p>

In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, a fire severely damaged much of the interior furnishings and the rose window. The basilica’s main fa\u00e7ade, facing the Pla\u00e7a del Pi, is dominated by its large rose window, approximately 10 meters in diameter, which was reconstructed after the Civil War. Another notable feature is the bell tower, standing 54 meters tall, visible from various points in the city. The tower houses several bells, one of which, known as “La Antonia,” is one of the largest in Barcelona, weighing over 1,800 kg.
