In 1891, the Orfe\u00f3 Catal\u00e0, a prominent choral society in Catalonia, was founded in Barcelona. With the growth of the group came the need for a dedicated venue to meet, rehearse, and perform. Thus, the Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana was born.<\/p>

To build the Palau, they chose the site of an old cloister from the Church of San Francisco de Paula, which had been damaged by fire in 1854. The modernist architect Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner drew inspiration from nature and used materials like iron and glass to create an innovative and unique structure for its time.<\/p>

The Fa\u00e7ade<\/h3>

\u00a0<\/p>

The Palau\u2019s original fa\u00e7ade, located on Carrer de Sant Pere M\u00e9s Alt, was the only entrance until 1989. This fa\u00e7ade blends modernist and baroque elements, featuring Miquel Blay\u2019s sculpture \u201cLa can\u00e7\u00f3 popular catalana\u201d (\u201cThe Catalan Popular Song\u201d), which represents the people to whom traditional Catalan music is dedicated.<\/p>

The current main entrance is in the square created after the demolition of the Church of San Francisco de Paula in 2002. From the square, you can admire the stained glass window that was previously hidden by the church. From the main entrance, you can access the foyer, an open space for public use, often serving as a resting area during concert intermissions or a place to enjoy a coffee. The lobby also features a grand staircase adorned with glass balustrades.<\/p>

The concert hall seats 2,049 people and is bathed in color and light thanks to the stained glass windows, mosaic-covered columns, and the iconic inverted stained glass dome in the ceiling, which casts a warm, colorful glow over the auditorium.<\/p>

On stage, the grand organ draws attention with its impressive size, sitting above the mosaic of 18 modernist muses, each playing different musical instruments. Other artistic tributes to music include busts of Beethoven and Josep Anselm Clav\u00e9, and sculptures depicting Wagner\u2019s \u201cRide of the Valkyries.\u201d<\/p>
